What’s a computer? Early tablet computers were a niche device - fairly overpriced alternative to laptops with early touch screens and styluses. When first iPad was released in 2010, it pretty much changed the definition of the word - and tablets became basically big smartphones. This was followed by a bunch of Android tablets, some in the higher price range, but others selling for cheap. Unlike smartphones though, Apple managed to remain the top manufacturer in the tablet space - and iPad apps managed to attract more dedicated development than Android tablet-optimized apps - yet there was always a question of what the tablets were actually good for, they were never really a must-have device like computers or smartphones were. ...

30 years later, edit is back Back in 1991, Microsoft released MS-DOS 5.0 - one of the most important releases of that OS ever, and the first one to receive a retail release. Driven by the growing OS competition on the PC platform at that time - such as DR-DOS - MS-DOS 5.0 was packed with tons of new features, such as improved memory and disk management, and - the subject of this topic - new MS-DOS Editor, also known as edit. It was the first full-screen editor shipped with MS-DOS, as previous versions only had a rudimentary edlin line editor. Edit was originally the editing component of the QBasic IDE/interpreter. However, QBasic and most other DOS tools were discontinued with the release of Windows 95 - edit remained, but was decoupled from QBasic and updated with some new features. It remained like that, unchanged, all the way until Windows 10 when it was finally removed - although in the last few releases of Windows, it was only available on the 32-bit versions due to compatibility issues. ...

Windows 10 is about to be gone soon Windows 10 is reaching EOL (end of life) on October 14 this year1. The problem is, it still represents over 50% of the total desktop market share 2 - and that includes other Windows Versions, macOS, Linux and others. Companies are being slow and careful about migrating due to not just hardware issues, but making sure their configurations and software work properly, as performing upgrades on scale and with minimal interventions and productivity breaks is a goal for any IT department, and they have been burned before 3. Running an unsupported OS is a massive security risk, unless it’s not connected to any network, so there are some choices that need to be made. ...

A spicy question. Overused as well. People can sometimes be downright cultish about their desktop/laptop OS preferences - or what they’re simply used to. That goes for both people in the tech industry and outside of it. There are also differences across industries and countries. For instance, comparing Croatia where I live and USA, ChromeOS is practically non-existant here, and Windows has a far larger market share over macOS. Just popping the question is often enough to get one into heated arguments. ...
